Myth #1: Replacement Windows Are Different from New Windows

There are very few differences in installing replacement windows vs. new window installation. There is, however, a slight difference in the installation process of replacement wood windows compared to replacement vinyl or aluminum windows. The process depends on whether there is a full frame replacement or an insert replacement with wood windows. Vinyl or aluminum windows must have both the frame and sash removed in most cases, resulting in full frame replacement. With either wood or vinyl window replacements, the result is the same, a brand new window will be installed, the process is just slightly different.

Myth #2: You Can't Replace Windows During the Winter

Because winter can be bitterly cold, you couldn’t possibly have your windows replaced then, right? While it seems logical that replacing windows in the winter would open your house to the elements, in reality, a replacement window specialist who knows what they’re doing will always take precautions to ensure that your home is protected from the cold.

First, the rooms where work will be done are closed off from the rest of your home to minimize temperature changes. Then, the crew will work quickly and efficiently, with one crew member inside and one outside to ensure no debris is tracked in and out of the house. Your home will be exposed to the elements for less than 10 minutes while the old window is removed and the new one put in place. Finishing work is completed with your home sealed against the cold.

Myth #3: Windows Can’t Have Any Effect on Energy Efficiency

Experts estimate that up to 70 percent of energy is lost through windows and doors, and 90 percent of this heat loss occurs through the glass. Here are some simple reminders for lower utility bills when choosing replacement windows:

• Choose “Low-E” (low emissivity) windows that protect your furniture from UV damage and help retain heat.
• Argon gas is denser than air, and adding it between the panes of double- or triple-pane windows improves insulation.
• “Low-E” windows with argon gas eliminate drafts that occur when differing temperatures meet, thus lowering your monthly utility bills.

Myth #4: Wood Windows Are the Best Windows Available

Although wood was once the mainstay material for windows, vinyl windows are superior to wood in many ways. While wood tends to swell with moisture and may rot or grow mold from dampness, vinyl replacement windows constructed with unplasticized PVC (uPVC) are designed to be water-resistant, safe and strong.
